Julian Edelman squashes speculation that he could join Tom Brady, Buccaneers in 2021

No matter how much Tom Brady may joke about Julian Edelman returning to the NFL, it isn’t going to happen.

Edelman announced his retirement earlier in the offseason, but because of the comments made by Brady, there was speculation that he could unretire to join the Buccaneers for one last run at a Super Bowl title.

The former Patriots receiver has shut down that notion at every turn, however, and he continued to do so on a recent episode of “The Michael Irvin Podcast.”

“My knee’s breaking down, I’m not going to sit here, you know, I got everything I wanted,” Edelman said. “I got three rings, played in a magical dynasty, with an unbelievable franchise coach, best quarterback of all time, like, yo, I’m not a greedy guy. I played to win, I played to compete, I don’t need anything else to prove. I’m good with what I did, I left it all out on the field.”

Even if the 34-year-old Edelman was healthy enough to play, it’s more likely that he would stay in New England rather than go to Tampa Bay.

“I’m a one-team guy,” he said.

Indeed, he was, and his 12-year career with the Patriots was a strong one. He finished with 620 catches, 6,822 receiving yards and 36 touchdowns and is second all time with 1,442 postseason receiving yards. He also earned those three Super Bowl rings and a Super Bowl MVP award.

Edelman will go down as a Patriots great, and perhaps an all-time great. But at this point, his career is over.

And nothing that Tom Brady says will change that.
